Your Cancer Treatment Journey — From First Contact to Recovery

Step 1: Initial Contact and Virtual Consultation

Your journey begins with a simple step: sharing your medical reports with our team. You can WhatsApp your CT/MRI scans, biopsy reports, and blood work to +91 7700058024, or email them through our website contact form. Our team responds within 24 hours.

Dr. Nagarajan personally reviews every case. A virtual consultation is arranged via WhatsApp video call or the hospital’s telemedicine platform, where Dr. Nagarajan explains the diagnosis, discusses treatment options, and answers all your questions. For international patients, this consultation helps determine whether travel is necessary and provides a preliminary treatment plan and cancer surgery cost estimate.

Step 2: Planning Your Travel

Once you decide to proceed, our team springs into action. For international patients, we issue a medical visa invitation letter from Nanavati Max Hospital—typically processed within 24–48 hours. We help arrange flights and can coordinate airport pickup from Mumbai International Airport.

We provide accommodation near Nanavati Max Hospital in Vile Parle West—from budget-friendly options to premium serviced apartments. A dedicated patient coordinator is assigned to you and remains your single point of contact throughout your journey.

Step 3: Arrival and Pre-Operative Workup

On arrival in Mumbai, your coordinator meets you and facilitates hospital registration.

The pre-operative workup is typically completed in 2–3 days and includes advanced imaging (CT/MRI/PET-CT as needed), blood investigations and tumour markers, cardiac and pulmonary fitness assessments, any additional biopsies or endoscopic procedures if required, and anaesthesia evaluation.

Your case is presented at the multidisciplinary tumour board, and the final treatment plan is discussed with you and your family in detail.

Step 4: Surgery

Dr. Nagarajan personally leads every operation, supported by his trained surgical team, experienced anaesthesiologists, and dedicated OT nursing staff.

Depending on the type and complexity of your cancer, surgery may use the Da Vinci Xi robotic system, robotic cancer surgery, 4K laparoscopic surgery, or open cancer surgery for complex or locally advanced cancers.

The surgical duration ranges from 2–3 hours for standard procedures to 8–14 hours for complex operations like CRS + HIPEC surgery or Whipple procedure with vascular reconstruction.

Step 5: ICU and Post-Operative Recovery

After major cancer surgery, patients are monitored in the ICU for 24–48 hours (longer for very complex procedures).

The ICU team at Nanavati Max includes intensivists available round the clock. Once stable, you are transferred to a private ward room where you will be cared for by the nursing team with regular visits from Dr. Nagarajan and his surgical team.

Post-operative recovery, physiotherapy, and mobilisation begin early to aid healing. Dietary guidance is provided by a nutritionist, with a gradual transition from liquids to soft food and eventually to a regular diet.

Step 6: Discharge and Recovery

Hospital stay varies by surgery type:

  • Robotic/laparoscopic colectomy: 4–6 days.
  • Whipple procedure: 7–10 days.
  • Major liver resection: 5–8 days.
  • CRS + HIPEC surgery: 10–14 days.

Before discharge, you receive a detailed discharge summary with diagnosis, surgical details, pathology report, and follow-up plan.

Medications and wound care instructions are explained clearly. If chemotherapy or radiation therapy is recommended, the treatment protocol is provided in writing so it can be administered by your local oncologist if you prefer.

Step 7: Follow-Up from Home

Your relationship with Dr. Nagarajan does not end at discharge.

Virtual follow-up consultations are arranged at scheduled intervals via WhatsApp video call or telemedicine. Imaging and blood work can be done locally and shared digitally for Dr. Nagarajan’s review.

The surgical team remains accessible for any questions or concerns during your recovery. If any complications arise, our team provides immediate guidance and, if necessary, facilitates your return for follow-up cancer care and in-person evaluation.
